Preschool Idea: Frog Counting Game

 

Homework time is a tough time in the Grant abode. The girls need assistance, dinner needs to be made, and Oliver is cranky and bored. We've started making him home work each afternoon as well and this was this week's favorite: The Frog Counting Game.

What you need:

egg carton

plastic frogs

dice

What you do:

1. Have child roll the dice

2. Count the dots on the dice and place the appropriate number of frogs into the egg carton

3. Oliver found this rather easy so I started asking him to subtract some and tell me how many frogs were left and then the next turn, I had him add some extra and tell me how many.

4. It really is that easy and entertaining. We also sang the "Green and Speckled Frog Song", pretending the egg carton were the log, which reinforces subtraction. 

Whereas the girls are drawn to language, this boy of mine is enthralled by numbers. We started measuring with him this week, so I'll have something next week to share! 

 

Preschool Idea of the Week: Blueberry Count

Oliver came home the other day thrilled that he knew all his numbers. From that day forward, we've been counting everything and I thought of this fun project to help with his number recognition.

It was easy peasy:

I cut out muffin shapes, drew a number of blueberries on each muffin and the corresponding number on the bottom of the muffin. Oliver had to match the written number with a plastic number and also fill in the muffin top with the correct number of blueberries. This also proved to be a very good project for fine motor skills, as I cut the blueberries rather small. 

Preschool Idea of the Week: a New Favorite App

Oliver and I have been hit fairly hard with a stomach virus so this week's preschool idea is morphing into our favorite app, Endless Alphabet. It is great for letter recognition both visually, as the kiddo must find the letter and also sensory because they are dragging the letters to the matching letter. Great for vocabulary building as well and the animation is so very cute. One of those apps even I get sucked into.

While I'm discussing kid apps, a favorite of mine for the girls is Sushi Monster. It makes math, not a favorite subject in this house, a wee bit more fun than flashcards.
